Do you know how to use "around/about"(差不多) in Chinese?
"差不多" chà bù duō
This word is widely used in daily Chinese language use.
In Chinese, "差不多" means roughly, around a certain time, or to the point where something is about to happen.
The concept of"差不多"in terms of time
In daily life, Chinese people are not so demanding in terms of precision for many things. Perhaps the most striking example is their sense of time. For instance, if you agree to leave together at 8:00 AM, a German might arrive exactly when the clock strikes 8, while a Chinese person would likely arrive around 8:10. A Chinese person making an appointment with you would probably say something like:
“明天我们“差不多”8点钟就出发。”
"Tomorrow we'll leave around 8:00 AM."
Instead of saying:
“明天我们8点正就出发。”
"Tomorrow we'll leave at 8:00 AM sharp."
"差不多" At-Food Rituals
When dining out with Chinese people, towards the end of the meal and when it's time to pay the bill, they'll ask their companion, "Are you full?" The companion will usually reply, "差不多"
At this point, the person who wants to treat will say, "If you're still hungry, order some more." Only then will the companion truly reply, "No need, I'm really full."
Therefore, the Chinese expression "差不多" is generally just a neutral term. If you want to get further answers, you need to probe more.
